Meet Your Therapist

Kristen Shortell, MS, LPC, LPAT, ATR-BC Owner // Clinician

I earned my Masters of Science in Art Therapy and Counseling from the College of New Rochelle and am currently working in Monmouth County, New Jersey, as a licensed professional counselor (LPC) and licensed professional art therapist (LPAT). I am a nationally recognized board certified art therapist (ATR-BC). I have worked in a wide variety of settings with diverse populations, including children with chronic health problems, geriatric facilities, in-home with families, short-term adult inpatient, children's outpatient, adolescent group homes, and private practice. I provide mental health counseling, art therapy, psychotherapy, and psycho-education from a humanistic perspective, valuing the whole person and empowering clients to take an active role in their treatment.

I gained a specialization in phototherapy (photography-based art therapy) in 2017 and have worked independently as a photographer since 2013. I recognize the power of images and the act of creating, and seek to promote self-awareness and understanding in my clients. The ultimate goal is to better express complex thoughts and emotions in a way that promotes more control, freedom, and overall sense of wellbeing in one's life.

In my free time, I enjoy hanging out with my two mini golden-doodles, Indy and Sammy (who are possible future therapy dogs). For self-care, I’ve recently taken up teaching myself embroidery and doing yoga. I’m a big fan of classic movies, Graeter’s ice cream, photo editing, and reading books on the beach.
